At Children’s Ark Kindergarten we follow the interests of the children. At the moment they are very interested in Space and Space Travel. We have been learning about how rockets work with the help of one of our parents. Another parent has been teaching the children about the magnetic field of our own planet and how to make a compass from a needle, cork, magnet, and water. We are planning a trip to the Auckland Stardome later in the term to learn more about our solar system. We have been learning about the different planets and the distances involved in space. We built a space station and rocket which the children have been enjoying in their imaginative play, with lots of adventures taking off to visit the moon. We will also be looking at being an astronaut and what they eat in space, as well as all the issues with the lack of gravity.
It has not been the easiest topic to cover as it is not something the children can experience for themselves, however, the research we have been able to do using the computer and library books has been a great way for children to learn how to discover new information. We have been able to incorporate all areas of the curriculum including literacy as we learn planet names and practice drawing them. Maths has been included as we look at large numbers for distances, as well as the size of the planets in relation to each other. The science, of course, is a big curriculum area that is well covered in this interest. Communication and social development have also been a big part of the interest with the imaginative play among the children being very popular.
We will continue with the learning for as long as the interest is fuelled by the children and we look forward to making discoveries alongside them. As teachers, it is great that we get the chance to learn too!
If you live in the Torbay or Long Bay or even East Coast Bays area and have young children, you are very welcome to come and visit us and enroll your child. We currently have a few spaces available. We are looking to the future and the needs of our community and are currently in the planning process for a new centre to cater to all ages of preschool children. We will also be operating for longer hours to cater to working parents.
